Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy is one of the premier research Institutes of University of Kashmir. It was founded in 1979 as an academic and research centre under the directorship of Prof. Ale Ahmad Saroor, an eminent scholar of Iqbal Studies and Comparative Literature. Its primary focus has been conducting research programmes (M.Phil and Ph.D) and individual research projects. In due course of time its activities/programmes got expanded under the nomenclature of “Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy”. The Institute is multidisciplinary academic centre and conducts research in Iqbal Studies and allied subjects like Humanities Social Sciences, Law and Religious Studies. On the one hand, it promotes studies on Allama Iqbal’s multi-faceted contribution to Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Religion, Culture and Social Sciences and on the other hand, to the Indian legacy of literature, culture and philosophy vis-a vis the modern developments. So far the Institute has produced more than one hundred twenty Ph.Ds in the subject and one hundred publications of high academic standards. Many of them have gone through second or third editions of print.
Iqbaliyat is our annual, bi-lingual (Urdu-English) peer reviewed, UGC Care listed and ISSN research journal. We have been publishing it since 1981. The Institute has the privilege of utilising the services of eminent scholars belonging to diverse fields of knowledge as visiting faculty or guest speakers for external lectures. Among them include Prof. Alam Khundmiri, Professor of Philosophy, Osmania University Hyderabad, Prof. Masoud Hussain Khan, Former Vice-Chancellor Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, Prof. Jagan Nath Azad, renowned Iqbal scholar, Prof. Saeed Akbar Abadi, Former Dean, Faculty of Theology, AMU, Aligarh, Prof. Abdul Haq, Iqbalian Scholar, Professor Emiratus Delhi University, Prof. Obaidur Rehman, Former Head, Dept. of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, Prof. Annemarie Schimmel Harvard University USA, Ian Almond, George Town University Washington USA and Prof. Qazi Azhar, Michgan University America, Dr Taqi Abidi, Canada. We organised about fifty conferences of national/ International nature on the various important themes of Iqbal Studies and Comparative Literature and Philosophy.
At present the Institute is seriously pursuing the following academic activities:
- Integrated Ph.D programme.
- Organising national, International seminars/ conferences on the vital themes of Iqbal Studies, Comparative Literature and Philosophy.
- Teaching OE/GE classes (relating to Iqbal Studies)
- Planning to introduce one year diploma course on Iqbal Studies and Philosophy from 2024
- Organising inter college symposia or essay competition relating to Iqbal’s thought and art.
- Publication of new books on Iqbal Studies and allied subjects.
- Counselling the students interested in research in Iqbal Studies.
- Academic collaboration with affiliated Colleges of our University and Local Universities and reputed academic centres of the country for promotion of Iqbal’s contribution to world knowledge and literature.
- Organising a workshop on language learning skills and academic writing.
The Institute is committed to promote knowledge dissemination and development in the light of Iqbal’s profound and all embracing contribution to it and project its broader scope.
The Institute has kept its publications available for sale and some issues of its annual journal “Iqbaliyat” are available to access online.
